We finished the summer off with a block party, which I thought would never end. It was too loud, too contentious, Holly and Pam getting angry with the Muslims who lived at the end of the block, the Muslims acting insulted, everyone vying to make money from home-cooked foods, and Eti's money getting stolen sometime during the night. Count Augusto, who with the help of the older boys earlier in the day had rigged up a platform for a raucous salsa band, using recycled wood from torched buildings, had also rigged up electrical sources by cutting into streetlight wiring. He was drunk by nightfall and started a fight with a male community organizer who he claimed was trying to get credit for the party and interloping at the mike as an emcee. The word "bourgeois" was heard, even above the beat of the conga drums, until Gusto's pals, assisted by Paul, dragged the count off.

But a few days later, the younger women and the children were pronouncing the block party a great success, a fitting end to a wonderful summer. Millie said she hadn't danced so much in ages.

After the whirl of energy required to send the children off to school in spiffy clean clothes, as the days grew cooler and shorter, the women who had worked with us grew wistful. Their comments indicated how much confidence they had gained by working and how much they missed the work, not just because of the sense of purpose it had given them but because of the contribution they had made to the neighborhood. The sense of community we had fostered was disappearing, along with community based jobs. The cold air moving in from the north carried a scent of foreboding.
